Far from the light pollution of nearby cities, Carlsbad Caverns National Park features a wonderfully dark night sky, perfect for stellar viewing. Rangers will have telescopes available for public viewing, pointed at astronomical objects such as planets in our Milky Way and maybe even a few galaxies beyond. Carlsbad Caverns To Re-Open October 17th!

“CARLSBAD – Carlsbad Caverns National Park re-opened to visitors today, Thursday, Oct. 17.  Visitors can access all public areas and travel on park roads immediately, as well as use park facilities and other public services.  The park has been closed since Tuesday, Oct. 1 because of the lapse in congressional appropriations of funds to operate the national parks.

“We are excited and happy to be back at work. We welcome visitors back to Carlsbad Caverns National Park,” said Chief Ranger, Lila Mohesky-Roybal. “This is a great time of year to enjoy all that the caverns have to offer.”

Carlsbad Caverns Awarded Certification in Sustainable Design Initiative

CARLSBAD –  Carlsbad Caverns National Park is one of four pilot
projects newly certified by the Sustainable Sites Initiative™
(SITES™), a comprehensive rating system for sustainable design,
construction, and maintenance of built landscapes. The 2010 Bat Cave
Draw Rehabilitation project, which replaced a parking lot near the
entrance to Carlsbad Cavern with native vegetation, received a
two-star rating by SITES.

The Bat Cave Draw Rehabilitation project was part of a group of 150
projects participating in an extensive, two-year SITES pilot program.

CARLSBAD – In celebration of the National Park Service’s 97th birthday, Carlsbad Caverns National Park will offer free general entry to the cavern on Sunday, August 25. Entrance will be free for the two self-guided trails in the cave, the Big Room and Main Corridor trails. All other ranger-led tours will require normal fees on this day.

CARLSBAD – Memorial Day weekend kicks off the 84th anniversary of Carlsbad Caverns National Park’s summer Bat Watch Program. Park rangers have presented summertime bat flight programs since 1929 and as a result, Carlsbad Caverns National Park has one of the best-known bat colonies in the world.

Nightly, half hour programs begin at sunset as rangers dispel myths and extol the virtues of bats. Thousands of visitors have learned about these nocturnal creatures as they watch them spiral out of the cavern on their nightly forage for insects.

Carlsbad Caverns to Increase Entrance Fee

CARLSBAD – Sixteen years after the last increase from $5 to $6, Carlsbad Caverns National Park will raise its entrance fee beginning this summer to $10 per person (age 15 and up). In the past, all fees collected went into the General Treasury. In 1996 a “fee demonstration” program was established by Congress allowing one-third of all national parks, including Carlsbad Caverns, to retain up to 80 percent of the money collected. The remaining 20 percent is pooled for use by national parks that cannot collect entrance fees.

“Guadalupe Mountains National Park Superintendent Dennis A. Holiday Tour Schedule- Carlsbad Caverns, NM

Carlsbad Caverns National Park Adding Tours for the Holidays Starting December 26-

CARLSBAD CAVERNS NATIONAL PARK – Additional tours will be added to the King’s Palace schedule to allow visitors the chance to participate in one of the park’s most popular cave tours. King’s Palace tours normally run at 10:00 am and 1:00 pm daily, but, during the week of December 26 – January 1 three additional tour times will be added to the schedule. During that week visitors may choose additional tours at 11:00 am, 12:00 noon and 2:00 pm, all tours filling on a first-come, first-served basis.
